Thompson Center Hawken Serial Numbers

May 17, 2014  Re: Thompson Center Hawken Flintlock Serial # 32XX I was told in the late 1970's when I started in the hobby, that most factory made ML's had a 1-48 twist as to allow the use of roundballs and conical type projectiles.

The differences between a T/C Cherokee & a T/C Seneca are several.
If a side-hammer T/C is unmarked on it's octagon barrel as to the model, the first step towards determining the model would be to measure the barrel size, across-the-flats.
Cherokee's/Seneca's will have a 13/16' thick octagon barrel - much thinner/lighter than the 15/16' or 1' barrels of the Renegade & Hawken rifles.
Seneca's will have a brass patchbox in the RH side of the buttstock; Cherokee's will have no patchbox.
Seneca's will have a brass FE tip; Cherokee's have none.
Seneca's will have a 27' long barrel.
Cherokee's will have a 24' long barrel.
Seneca's will have double set triggers: Cherokee's will have either a DST like the Seneca or a single trigger, depending upon when it was made (early/late).
CAVEAT: Since the Cherokee/Seneca rifles have slimmer locks, stocks & barrels, compared to the heavier Hawken/Renegade rifles, they should not be loaded as heavily as the approved loads for the larger rifles.
Below, the upper rifle is a Seneca .45, the lower is a Cherokee .45 - both of which I routinely load 70gr FFFg under T/C MaxiHunter conical boolits for deer hunting.
FWIW - The similar scaled-down Patriot pistol was only made in a single model, in either .36 or .45 cal - with DST's that operate in reverse of the rifle's DST's.
