EDITORS’ NOTES
This Greatest Hits album was released in 1980, when Aerosmith’s future was very much in question. Guitarist Joe Perry had quit and formed The Joe Perry Project, while the group’s other guitarist, Brad Whitford, would soon form Whitford/St. Holmes. This single-LP collection features the first album appearance of the studio version of “Come Together,” the Beatles cover that Aerosmith contributed to the soundtrack of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, the 1978 film starring Peter Frampton and The Bee Gees. “Remember (Walking in the Sand)” is the band’s convincing cover of the Shangri-Las hit written by “Shadow” Morton; it appeared on Night in the Ruts, an album that saw Aerosmith’s classic lineup being juggled around. But the timeless power of “Dream On,” the R&B prance of “Same Old Song and Dance,” the dark teenaged funk of “Sweet Emotion” and “Walk This Way,” and the screaming finality of “Draw the Line” made Aerosmith among the most popular and essential bands of the ‘70s.
