The Division of Motorist Services has driver license service centers located throughout the state. Appointments are provided at all full service offices. Check our Service Center Directory for addresses, telephone numbers and hours of operation. Appointments are recommended.

Please note: Starting in August 2017, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles will begin issuing a new, more secure Florida driver license and ID card. By the end of December 2017, the new credential will be available at all service centers throughout Florida and online. Previous driver license and ID cards will still be in use alongside the new credential until replaced or phased out.

The following tests are given at driver license service centers and may or may not be required for the driver license or ID card you seek. The testing chart located in this information will help you determine the test(s) you will be required to complete.

• Hearing – Drivers applying for a license who are deaf or cannot hear conversation spoken in a normal tone of voice, are restricted to driving with an outside rearview mirror which should be mounted on the left side of the vehicle, or wearing of a hearing aid.
• Vision – Vision testing, using an eye machine located on the counter, is conducted in all driver license service centers. Individuals with visual acuity readings below 20/40 are referred to an eye specialist. Color blindness will not cause any special condition for licensing.
• Knowledge Exam – 50 multiple choice questions about traffic laws and traffic signs. To prepare, review the Florida Driver License Handbook and take the online practice test.
• Driving Test – You must provide a vehicle for the driving test. The vehicle must have a valid tag, proof of insurance and pass a vehicle inspection. During the driving test, the examiner will observe your ability to control the vehicle and how well you obey traffic laws.

Enhanced driver's licenses are available to U.S. Citizens who reside in the states of Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Vermont, and Washington. Enhanced driver's licenses are available to Canadian citizens residing in British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario, and formerly Quebec. The enhanced driver license (EDL) or enhanced ID card (EID) confirms your identity and citizenship. It's an acceptable alternative to a passport for re-entry into the U.S. You can only use it when you cross borders by land or sea. The EDL/EID is also an acceptable REAL ID document.

Driver license handbooks, motorcycle handbooks and commercial driver license handbooks are available at local driver license service centers. There is no charge for handbooks and they may be returned for re-use. These handbooks can also be viewed here.

Note: Customers applying for a commercial driver license should consider that the commercial driver license is a professional license with more testing requirements than other licenses. If you wish to apply for a commercial driver license, please obtain a study manual before testing.

What Type of License Do You Need and What are the Exam Requirements for Each?

• • Class E:Any non-commercial motor vehicles with Gross Vehicle Weight Rating less than 26,001 pounds, including passenger cars, 15-passenger vans including the driver, trucks or recreational vehicles and two or three-wheel motor vehicles 50 cc or less, such as mopeds or small scooters (see below). Farmers and drivers of authorized emergency vehicles who are exempt from obtaining a commercial driver license must obtain a Class E driver license.

      • hold learner’s license for 12 months;

    • Teens issued a traffic citation can elect to attend a traffic driving school to avoid a conviction.

  • Scooters 50 cc or less: Scooter being driven must be street legal (i.e. require proper operating equipment, such as brake lights, headlight, mirror per S. 316 F.S., and tag, title and registration) and must be operated by an individual with a Class E driver license or higher.
• • Class A: Commercial motor vehicles – trucks or truck combinations weighing with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds or more, provided that the towed vehicle is more than 10,000 pounds.

The Transportation Security Administration has begun posting airport signs to warn travelers about a deadline a year from now for identification to board planes.

The Department of Homeland Security’s Real ID program requires states to adopt better security measures for driver’s licenses and other identification, to discourage forgeries and prevent terrorism. Only about half the states have complied already with the program Congress created in 2005, in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks Sept. 11, 2001.

“Given today’s threat environment, this requirement is as relevant now as it was when the 9/11 Commission recommended it,' Jeh Johnson, secretary of Homeland Security, said in announcing the deadlines a year ago.

The states where residents will need identification other than driver’s licenses to fly on Jan. 22, 2018, are: Kentucky, Maine, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Washington.

But some critics have been reluctant to participate, out of privacy concerns and fears that it could lead to a national identity card. The federal standards require anti-counterfeit technology in the cards, and require states to verify an applicant’s identity and conduct background checks on workers who issue the licenses.

Montana Gov. Steve Bullock has said 'Montanans do not want or need Real ID,' a program he said 'raises real concerns about the unnecessary collection of Montanans' personal and private information by the federal government.' Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin vetoed legislation in April that aimed to make driver's licenses compliant, saying 'it has become increasingly clear that there is tremendous opposition and misunderstanding about the bill.'

TSA accepts alternative forms of identification, such as a passport, military ID or permanent-resident card. But because so many travelers use driver’s licenses for identification at TSA checkpoints, the agency posted signs as a reminder about the looming deadline.

“ID requirements are changing,” the signs state. “Starting January 22, 2018, you will need a driver’s license or ID from a state compliant with the Real ID Act, a state that has an extension for compliance or an alternate ID to fly.”

But part of the difficulty adopting Real ID – the reason for TSA’s early warning – is that some state legislatures meet for just a few months a year and still need to adopt policies or funding to comply.

Besides the effect on flights, residents of the eight non-compliant states other than Oklahoma won’t be able to use their driver’s licenses to enter federal agencies or nuclear power plants starting Jan. 30, 2017.

Five states – Alaska, California, Oklahoma, Oregon and Virginia – got federal extensions for residents to use their driver’s licenses for federal agencies through June 6.
